Waterfalls and autumn color are an irresistible combination, and the tributaries of the Cuyahoga and Chagrin rivers in Northeast Ohio are the perfect place to find both. Join us this fall as we explore finding compelling compositions and brilliant color in the valley.
Although most of the compositions will center around waterfalls and waterways, there are a few scenic overlooks which we will visit if the conditions are favorable, as well as a few colorful meadows and lakes. I’ll keep close watch on the most colorful areas right before the trip so that we can make the most of our time. During a typical three day trip during autumn, we’ll likely have a couple spots which are really peaking with color, a few more which will produce colorful images if the photographer places their camera in the right spot, and some that are pre or past peak. Even the places that aren’t peak can sill provide amazing images with the right composition, or with a focus on small details and fallen leaves.
Where to Stay
To be announced near Macedonia / Bedford, Ohio
Best airport: CLE in Cleveland is the closest airport just over an hour away.
Cell service:
Service will be good during the entire trip.
Physical Activity Requirements: Moderate activity. Each photo session we will walk at least .25 miles, typically .5 miles, and for at least one shoot, 1.5 miles total. The most challenging part will be to walk in shallow water (about 4 - 6” deep, never more than a foot) to get interesting angles on the small falls, and occasionally navigating down a hill. An average 40 - 70 year old should have no trouble, but if you have knee or back trouble or aren’t very steady on your feet, this may not be the trip for you.
Transportation:
Each participant must have their own transportation. Carpooling will be optional from the hotel a few miles away.
Food:
Please have breakfast on your own before we meet in the morning. For safety during Covid, you can elect to eat on your own for any and all meals. Those who wish to join for lunch or dinner, we can eat at a local restaurant that practices social distancing.
What to pack:
FACE MASK! This is required by the state of Ohio to enter any local business.
Tripod that can get wet in fresh water
DSLR camera
Your widest lens (at least 26mm with crop factor, even wider is better)
A lens in the 50 - 80 mm range isn’t necessary but can be useful for a couple compositions
If you have a macro lens and room in your bag, pack it. Again, not necessary, but once in a while a closeup of leaves floating in the water or an interesting insect or frog may appear.
Extra memory cards or laptop to download images
Polarizing filter for your primary wide angle lens. A standard neutral density filter is recommended as well.
Rain gear just in case
Waterproof boots, ideally waterproof to just below the knee. Farm boots or muck boots are perfect.
Bug spray / sunscreen if desired
Sunscreen
Bring a sample of your own work if you like. It can be fun to share during lunch break to get to know each other’s work.
A positive attitude. One negative person can put a cloud over the whole trip but good attitudes are contagious as well!
Cancellation Policy: Participant will receive a full refund of their deposit minus a $250 re-listing fee if we are able to fill the cancelled space. If we are unable to fill the cancelled space, we cannot issue a refund or credit of any kind.
