Total Fee: $450

From: Galena, OH

Target Group Size: 4 photographers
In a small town on the outskirts of Columbus Ohio, there is a lake that contains about 1/3 of Ohio’s entire nesting population of Prothonotary Warblers. This beautiful species relies on nest cavities over open water, and has been struggling to outcompete other cavity nesters as well as find suitable habitat. If you visit this lake an know where to look, they are actually quite easy to find and photograph. We will spend the day concentrating on this unique warbler and possible get a bonus bird or two along the way. This trip is timed immediately after our Lake Hope trip and perfectly coincides with the arrival of the male Prothonotaries on territory. I have done this as an add-on three other times in the past and it has always worked out perfectly.
Travel considerations: Those of you joining us from the Lake Hope trip, we will drive after our photography concludes on the 29th. This location is about two hours north towards Columbus, Ohio. There is a possibility we will visit an additional breeding territory even a little further north in the afternoon, depending on how the morning goes.
Equipment: We will use the same equipment that we used in Lake Hope
We will target Prothonotary Warbler and only work other species while we are waiting on the warblers.
quite a few other species nest in the vicinity
See below for some shots I have made in late April and the first few days of May in central Ohio swamps including the areas we are visiting
More information to be provided about where to stay upon signing up for the trip. Hotel costs are not included in the photo tour fee.
Some of our photography will take place right next to the road. There may be a three to five minute walk along level ground at one point.
